The Irish pair had divided public opinion
Twins John and Edward Grimes have been voted off ITV1's the X Factor, after losing in a sing-off against Olly Murs.

The pair, 18 and dubbed Jedward, sang Boyzone's No Matter What, but without a dance routine or any gimmicks.

Olly, one of the show favourites, said he was "a bit gutted" to be in the bottom two after the public vote.

But his performance of Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight was too good for the brothers and all the judges bar their mentor Louis Walsh voted them off.

The twins kept their smiles as they were voted out, saying Olly deserved to go through and reach the final.

One of the twins said: "It's been the greatest experience of my life. We're here every single weekend on live television having the greatest time of our life."

The other chipped in with: "It's, like, deadly. It's, like, so cool."

Their mentor, Walsh, said: "I've had the best time working with these guys. I feel young again. We've had an amazing time."

The spiky-haired pair had sung a medley of Wham's I'm Your Man and Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do) on a George Michael theme night on Saturday's show.

Afterwards, judge Simon Cowell admitted they had "converted a lot of people" - despite having compared them with the less successful half of Wham.

He told them: "I don't think it was George (Michael) and Andrew (Ridgeley), it was Andrew and Andrew."

The twins' talents divided opinion - Cowell had said they could not sing and they regularly got booed on the show but have been popular with many fans.

Bookmakers have breathed a sigh of relief at their departure with Gary Burton of Coral saying it had saved them from a potential £10m pay out.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Gordon Brown sent his best wishes to the twins after admitting he had got into trouble for having said they were "not very good".

The prime minister told ITV's This Morning he had "burnt my bridges with 'Jedward'" but hoped the twins would "do well".

Also performing on Sunday night's show was Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle, who said the whirlwind of the past six months had been "fantastic", adding: "Look out the public, that's all I can say, look out the public."

Earlier on Sunday, it was announced that the X Factor finalists had gone straight to number one in the UK singles chart with a cover version of Michael Jackson's You Are Not Alone in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital.

It has already sold more than 193,000 copies, making it the second highest selling single of the year so far.

Still left in the show are Joe McElderry, Stacey Solomon, Lloyd Daniels, Danyl Johnson and Olly Murs.
